Ficus Rubiginosa Australis Port Jackson Fig / Rusty Fig Ficus rubiginosa Australis, commonly known as the Port Jackson Fig or Rusty Fig, is a hardy, evergreen tree native to Australia, prized for its broad, leathery leaves, reddish-brown undersides, and robust, easy-care nature. In its natural habitat, it can grow into a large, buttressed tree, but when cultivated in pots or as an indoor specimen, it remains manageable and makes an excellent architectural feature. The leaves are a glossy, deep green on top with a soft, rusty hue beneath a unique colour contrast that gives the plant both texture and warmth. This species is ideal for bright, open interiors, conservatories, or even outdoor containers in mild climates. With its strong tolerance for pruning, dry air, and fluctuating conditions, Ficus rubiginosa Australis is a dependable, low-maintenance option for those looking to add a touch of natural structure and strength to their plant displays. Light Requirements Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light, but will tolerate some direct sun once acclimatised. Outdoors: Can be grown in full sun to part shade in mild climates. Low light: Tolerated, though growth will be slower and more open. Temperature & Humidity Ideal temperature: 1828C (6582F) Minimum temperature: Keep above 10C (50F); not frost-hardy. Humidity: Very tolerant of a wide range of humidity. Thrives in typical indoor air without issue. Watering Needs Watering frequency: Allow the top 57 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain. Winter: Reduce watering frequency during cooler months. Tip: Avoid overwatering this is a drought-tolerant species once established. Soil & Repotting Soil type: Well-draining potting mix. Use standard houseplant compost mixed with perlite or bark for added drainage. pH: Neutral to slightly acidic (6.07.0) Repotting: Every 23 years or when rootbound. Choose a heavy pot to support taller growth. Feeding Growing season (springsummer): Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Autumnwinter: Reduce or pause feeding as growth naturally slows. Pruning & Maintenance Pruning: Tolerant of hard pruning can be cut back to maintain shape or encourage bushier growth. Leaf care: Wipe leaves with a soft, damp cloth to keep them clean and healthy. Growth habit: Upright and branching excellent for shaping into a small indoor tree or bonsai-style specimen. Propagation Stem cuttings: Propagate easily via semi-hardwood cuttings in water or a moist compost mix. Air layering: Also effective for larger, more mature specimens. Pests & Problems Common pests: Mealybugs, scale, and spider mites particularly in dry or dusty conditions. Symptoms: Yellowing leaves, sticky residue, or visible insects. Treatment: Wipe affected areas and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Common issues: Leaf drop: Often triggered by overwatering, underwatering, or environmental stress. Brown tips: Typically due to low humidity or inconsistent watering. Toxicity & Safety Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested by pets or humans. May cause irritation due to the milky sap. Precaution: Keep out of reach of children and pets. Wear gloves when pruning. Indoor Care Highlights A durable, stylish fig species thats more forgiving than Ficus lyrata and ideal for indoor beginners. Offers a natural, grounded presence with its broad leaves and contrasting rusty undersides. Pairs beautifully with terracotta, stoneware, or natural-toned planters for a classic look. A versatile choice for conservatories, living rooms, home offices, or as a patio container plant in mild weather. Can be grown as a neat indoor tree, large shrub, or even trained as a bonsai.
